Charities supported for 2011/12
Goring and Streatley Concert Band members nominate different charities to support each year. We are supporting the following charities this year:
Sue Ryder Care Nettlebed - supports people with a wide range of neurological diseases and life-limiting illnesses, as well as their families, carers and friends both in this country and abroad. The range of services include long-term and respite residential care, day care centres and home care.
'Robbie the Robot' Appeal - ‘Robbie’, the da Vinci robot, has transformed prostate cancer operations at the Royal Berkshire Hospital. The robot provides the latest in state of the art robotic assisted surgery: this allows surgeons to perform radical prostate operations using all the clinical and technical capabilities of traditional open surgery, whilst enabling them to operate through the tiny incisions which characterise ‘keyhole’ surgery.
The Royal Berkshire NHS Trust acquired the da Vinci robot with a down payment from a very generous donation. To complete the purchase and own ‘Robbie’ outright we have to raise £1m over the next three years.
Sebastian’s Action Trust - has created the UK's only purpose-built facility that will offer respite holidays to very sick children and their families, enabling precious time to be spent together. The house, called The Bluebells, has been built in the pretty Hampshire village of North Waltham. It opened in July 2011. Nothing like this previously existed in the UK, making The Bluebells the first of its kind and Sebastian's vision all the more exceptional.
They also give practical support in many different forms to children battling with life-limiting illnesses and provide meaningful assistance at critical times to families exhausted by the stresses of hospital life and their child’s gruelling treatment. The Trust does not have a restrictive geographical catchment area and already supports families in the South East, principally from Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, however, we are happy to welcome families from outside these areas.
The Oxford Food Bank - The Oxford Food Bank collects good quality fresh food from local supermarkets and wholesalers and delivers it for free to numerous local registered charities. For every £1 they receive in donations they deliver at least £25 worth of fruit, vegetables, bread and dairy products. They are growing in size and generating a lot of interest both locally and nationally. Whilst they are a very efficient operation they do need funds to keep going so please help.
